Youth Performance Ensemble - Out of This World
Mar 6-May 8, 2021
In the spring session, we’ll launch into an Outer Space-themed production with intergalactic characters and out of this world locations. Students will put their theatre skills to work right away as they audition, rehearse and even craft alien costumes. The play’s scenes will be recorded and turned into a movie that will be shared with family and friends.
Dates: 3/6-5/8 (No class 3/27, 4/3)
Day/Time: Saturdays, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Instructor: Kathleen Lee
Location: Online via Zoom
*This class is meant to be paired with the winter session (priced separately,) but can be taken on it’s own. When you sign up for both the winter and spring session at the same time, you’ll receive a discount.
For an added adventure and warm-up, join the Dance Lab preceding this class from 10:00 am - 10:50 am. No experience necessary.
Some additional rehearsal and/or recording time may be necessary.
This session includes a final video presentation for families.
*As restrictions ease late in the session, we will consider moving to a hybrid model with alternating small groups attending in-person (possibly outdoors at first) while the other half rehearses online. We are carefully watching health advisories and conditions at local schools and don’t anticipate any in-person gatherings before mid-April. The goal is to create a video (from footage in person and/or on Zoom) of our completed project to share with families. We feel confident we can create a cohesive and meaningful performance opportunity for students that matches their comfort level. Please contact the Conservatory office if you have any questions or concerns.
What makes the Saturday Ensembles so special?
For nearly four decades, Saturdays at NCTC have been abuzz with activities for young people--from classes to showcases to full-blown productions. As students age up through the program, we are able to both meet them where they’re at and offer new challenges. So many kids have grown up with NCTC! Our dedicated staff works hard to make a connection with each ensemble member and to champion them through their growth in the program.
The community expectations are high of the Ensemble members. We expect older students to be mentors both by modeling their training and engaging with and supporting young performers. We challenge our younger students to enthusiastically try new skills, regularly perform works-in-progress for students and staff, and to actively see theatre productions. And we expect all of our students to treat each other with respect and to be mindful that they are working in a professional theatre environment.
Unlike other programs that offer performances in familiarly titled shows, we strive to earn the “new” in our name. Though sometimes based on known stories, we custom build experiences and performance pieces for our students, assuring that everyone has a meaningful place on the stage. Students are at the heart of all that we do. While our curriculum may be ever-evolving, our mission has stayed the same: Saturday Ensembles are a way of building a community for emerging theatre artists and a way in which we can celebrate them and their efforts.
