Mission:
Commission new work for the Pride Season and the YouthAware educational touring program.
Objectives:
A. Commission, develop, and premiere 1 new play with primarily LGBT themes every 24 months.
B. Commission, develop, premiere, and tour 1 new play for young audiences every 36 months.
History:
Since the New Plays Commissions program began in 2002, NCTC has developed and produced 3 world premieres: Breakfast with Scot by Michael Downing, Mysterious Skin by Prince Gomolvilas, and Crucifixion by Terrence McNally.

It’s Murder, Mary

Commissioned in 2006
This campy action packed comedy is modeled after the classic “who-dunnit” murder mystery genre. The play premieres as part of the Pride Season, May 9 - June 28, 2008.

Andrew is the author of a two-act fantasy comedy, Another Man’s Slingbacks. A member of the 2004/05 and 2006/07 PlayGround Writers Pool, his plays The Vibration of a Balloon and Ka-Pluto were staged by PlayGround in 2006/07. His ten-minute playArk Types was presented at the LSU Outworks Festival at Stage Q, Madison, WI; at the Bare Stage Theatre in Red Bluff, CA; and at the Riverside Arts Festival, Riverside, CA. He is the Scene Night Coordinator for Playwrights Center San Francisco, and a member of The Dramatists Guild.
Patricia is the author of several one-act plays, including The Champions of the World, The Dentist, and The Only Virgin in Jubilee County which won the 2007 Hill Country Playwrights Festival, as well as a two-act children’s play, The Maids! Her one-act, Real/Not Real, was selected for production and publication as part of the 2007 Bay Area One Acts Festival. Her ten-minute plays have been produced at the 2004 Bay Area Festival of One Act Plays (2nd Prize), 2004 and 2003 Short Leaps Festivals, Boston PlaySlam, Woman's Will 24-Hour PlayFest, North Park Playwrights Festival, and Sheherezade (2005-2007). She is the Board President, Playwrights Center of San Francisco, and a member of Theatre Bay Area, Play Café, and The Dramatists Guild. |

Blind Faith

Faith takes center stage in this new play that will examine the ever blurring separation of church and state in America. Slated for production in NCTC's 2008-09 Pride Season, running March 27 - May 3, 2009.
About the Author: Harry Cronin holds a Ph.D in Theatre from the University of Minnesota. He is the former Director of Theatre at the University of Portland and the current Professor in Residence at the Theological Union in Berkeley. Recent plays include: Dark Matter, DOOLEY (produced at NCTC in 2002), In Charge of the Fire, and The Children of Hercules. Harry has won the James H. Mitchell Award for Playwriting, a McKnight Foundation Fellowship, and a National Endowment Fellowship as well as two Dramalogue awards for his new play Memoirs of Jesus. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild, Screen Actors Guild, and First Stage in Los Angeles.

RIGHTS OF PASSAGE will tell the stories of LGBT people and their communities who are subject to discrimination due to their sexual orientation. This new play aims to reframe the discussion by taking on a global perspective in telling several intersecting real-life stories that unmask human rights violations throughout the world.
About the Authors: As Founding Artistic Director of The New Conservatory Theatre Center, Ed Decker has directed and produced numerous productions in the last 26 years. Mr. Decker is a graduate of San Francisco State University and the former director of the A.C.T. Young Conservatory. His work with playwrights Norman Allen, Terrence McNally, Mart Crowley, Jack Heifner, Hal Corley, Felice Picano, Brad Fraser, David Marshall Grant, Jeff Baron, Kevin Elyot, Jonathan Harvey, and Lee Blessing has brought many important plays to the West Coast.
Robert Leone is the Communications Manager for the Global Health Fellows Program, an organization that recruits, places, and supports public health professionals (fellows) working in more than 20 developing countries and in Washington, DC. Robert is also a freelance writer whose interviews have appeared on the Grace Cathedral website, in the San Francisco Bay Area Reporter, and in the Global Health Council print magazine. His works of fiction have been published in The Evergreen Chronicles, The Harrington Gay Men's Literary Quarterly, and Rosebud Magazine. Robert has also completed three plays, one of which was produced at the New Conservatory Theater Center in 2001. |
